Becoming a pharmacist is a challenging yet rewarding career move. There are many pharmacy schools throughout the United States that offer legitimate and reputable courses to aid in your goal to become a pharmacist or pharmacist technician.

The decision to become a pharmacist or pharmacist technician is a sound one. It is an excellent career decision and an easily achievable educational goal also. In most cases and in many states a bachelor’s degree is not necessary in order to become a pharmacist.

In order to begin a pharmacy degree your pre-pharmacy education must be completed. You must also take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test and depending what school you are planning to attend an interview may also be required.

With so many colleges, universities, and vocational technical schools offering pharmacy courses to their students you really have a wide array of options for every aspect of fulfilling your desire to be involved in the pharmacy industry. The pharmacy degrees typically offered through most higher learning institutions is Doctor of Pharmacy or PharmD degrees and Non Traditional PharmD degrees.

The latter is designed to accommodate currently practicing pharmacists. A pharmacist who has a BS in pharmacy from any of the accredited pharmacy schools and wants to practice at a more advanced level benefits from the availability of the Non-Traditional PharmD degree. This particular degree is typically offered with flexible scheduling. Most courses are also available through Internet access to accommodate the working pharmacists who typically benefit from this type of education opportunity.

Why would anyone choose pharmacy schools in order to gain a career skill? If you think about the importance of pharmaceuticals in today’s society you will be hard pressed to argue their non-existence in the future. Pharmacy schools and the pharmacists that are produced in them are an important part of education, modern medicine, and society also.

Pharmacy schools provide both challenges and rewards. Learning the effects of medicines and understanding the human body is just the beginning of this exciting career choice. Ultimately, serving as a pharmacist is both a rewarding and challenging job.

Pharmacy schools also offer courses that strictly pertain to business at hand. Whether you are directing your studies toward being a pharmacist or pharmacist technician you will not have to do prerequisite courses that have nothing to do with your goal. Courses such as pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy law ethics, and clinical pharmocokinetics are typical of PharmD degree courses. A license to practice pharmacy has always been required in the United States.

The rewards from attending pharmacy schools will benefit you directly and will also benefit you quickly. Being skilled at catching medicines prescribed by doctors that truly don’t mix well in a human is the life saving knowledge you as a pharmacist will bring to the work place each day. As a pharmacist you will be enriching the health and well being of your patients. You will be giving advice and recording information on a daily basis.

Along with the educational skills that you will acquire in pharmacy schools you will also gain the intuition to become a people person. All of the skills you will learn will be the beneficial and will also yield positive rewards throughout the duration of your career as a pharmacist or pharmacist technician.

A career in pharmaceutical science is always rewarding, as a pharmacy technician is among the leading professionals in the pharmaceuticals industry. Pharmacy technician is always there to assist pharmacists in filling prescriptions for drugs and reviewing orders for drug allergies, interactions and incompatibilities. Pharmacy Technicians may also be responsible for calling doctors’ offices for prescription refill; cleaning and sterilizing dispensing bottles and instruments; answering questions regarding non-drug products; transporting medications, drug-delivery devices, and other pharmacy equipment from the pharmacy to nursing units and clinics.

Pharmacy technicians should possess a National pharmacy training certificate as Pharmacists usually prefer to employ certified pharmacy technicians. With the increase in population and the hospitals as well as medical centre, the need will increase and pharmacy technicians will be in large demand. Some hospitals, proprietary schools, vocational or technical colleges, and community colleges offer formal education programs inclusive of internships, where students gain hands-on experience in actual pharmacies.

To pursue pharmacy technician as a career, one has to pass the licensing exam and be ready to answer all queries from the patients and guide them perfectly. Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhT) obtained the license issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Exams are conducted at various centers nationally and there are also employers who provide on-the-job training for people and then recruit them as pharmacy technicians.

Pharmacy technicians must ascertain that people understand and follow their instructions as they need to make sure all the instructions have been clearly articulated. They need to precise in their communication. Pharmacy technicians should be knowledgeable in respect to the effects of all medicines, and whether these medicines and drugs can be given to the patients.

Science classes are good preparation for oneself in the process of getting the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree curriculum. Courses in biology, chemistry, physics, Science and mathematics are especially desirable. Those with good written and verbal communication skills are excellent candidates. A balanced and comprehensive high school and college education is the first step in the pursuit of a professional degree in pharmacy, especially in the areas of math and science

Although pharmacists do not have the most visible job in health care they are a critical element to the delivery of quality patient care. Some of the areas where Pharmacy Technicians can contribute in are;

Nursing Home and Extended Care Facility Pharmacy – They review patient charts for correct dosages, drug interactions, adverse reactions, or side effects as consultants.

Community Pharmacy – Community pharmacists are charged with the safe and efficient distribution of prescription medications, advising patients on the proper use of their prescription and non-prescription medication use and keeping the records of patients and their health, illnesses, and medications.

Industrial Pharmacy – Pharmacists in pharmaceutical manufacturing may work in research, and development, testing of medications in lots of multiple sectors. Pharmacists who work in the pharmaceutical industry need an additional postgraduate degree, such as a master’s or a Ph.D. degree.

Advanced Pharmacy Careers – Doctor of Pharmacy or Pharm. Degree graduates can work as drug information specialists in a hospital or other health care organizations. They will be able to find ample practice opportunities in managing health care organizations, home health-care agencies and general and specialized clinics.

In 2002, pharmacy aides occupied about 60,000 jobs in the United States. Approximately 80% are employed by private retail pharmacies or drugstore chain stores and about 10% labor in hospitals, and the remaining in pharmacies that use mail-order pharmacies, pharmaceutical wholesalers, or clinics.

Employers favor candidates with well-established customer service and good communication skills and familiarity in handling inventories and working on a computer. Full-time as well as part-time work opportunities are deemed to be excellent, particularly for aides with job experience relating to pharmacology, stock clerks, or cashiers in different retail locations.

So if you have all it takes to be a qualified pharmacist technician, and have lots of confident in excelling in this field, hope that all the information here are useful as your step towards a physical technician career!
