Understanding the day-to-day responsibilities of a career profession is important before investing time and money. Sure, career days in high schools often help in enlightening students on what certain jobs entail. Another way is to actually speak to someone who is doing the job that you want and get first hand knowledge from them.
Sometimes, job titles give a hint on what a person does day-to-day, such as an English teacher. Just by hearing the title, you’ll know that on regular a work day, that person is teaching English to students. But how does a Pharmacy Technician work? What do they do everyday? What kind of responsibilities do they have?
In most, or all, descriptions for a pharmacy tech, the work entails assisting the pharmacist in their day-to-day duties. This means freeing them up so that they can have more time to manage the pharmacy and make the business grow. Thus, on any given day, a pharmacy technician could be working to make prescription labels, calling up doctor offices to verify refill requests, and filling up prescriptions by counting and measuring the pills or medication required by the patient.
Also, part of a pharmacy technician’s work is to take care of customers by answering their questions. Now, they don’t answer medical questions. That’s a no no. In a retail setting, what pharmacy technicians do is answer questions about the pharmacy, such as where to find a certain over-the-counter medicine. They also answer questions about other non-medicinal products within the pharmacy itself.
Pharmacy technicians may have to work in different types of environment, but their responsibilities remain largely the same and that’s to assist the pharmacist. Aside from retail stores, there are work for pharmacy technicians in hospitals, doctor’s offices, dental offices, and medical centers. But in all cases, the job requires attention and accuracy. Whenever a customer comes in for a new prescription, they are relying on the pharmacy tech to provide what they need exactly because, in many cases, it’s a matter of better health, life, or death.
